Fluon®PTFE

PTFE accounts for 60-70% of the total demand for fluoropolymers.
Although discovered over 60 years ago, applications are still being explored in new fields thanks to its many excellent properties.
The particular application determines the most appropriate grade to use.

Polytetrafluoroethylene CAS 9002-84-0 CAS 9002-84-0

Can be used within a wide temperature range (-180℃ ∼ 260℃)

Oxygen Index >95, V-0 (UL-94 Method)

Inert to almost all chemicals

Not affected by any solvents

Low dielectric constant over a wide frequency range and excellent insulation.

Low coefficient of friction

Excellent non-stick and mould release properties

Suitable for outdoor use (no detriment to properties when used outdoors)



Grades, processing, applications of Fluon® PTFE

Due to its high melt viscosity, PTFE does not flow when heated above its melting point.
Therefore it is not possible to mould PTFE using techniques used for general thermoplastics, such as extrusion with screws or injection moulding.
Fluon®PTFE is available in the following five grades, each grade type being particularly suitable for certain processes or applications.

Improvement of Melt tension for thermoplastics

Fluon® PTFE fibrillates easily by shear strength.
Fluon® PTFE that has this fibrillation characteristic can improve the melt-tension of thermoplastics.
Fluon®PTFE granular grades, CD grades and AD grades can be used for this application.
CD grades are particularly suited because of their easy handling and good fibrillation ability.
Generally 0.1∼1.0 % of PTFE is added for matrix thermoplastics.

Anti-drip application

1) 0.5 phr of PTFE is added into PC and melt mixed by a kneader.
Mixing condition) kneader : Laboplastmil (Toyo Seiki Seisaku-sho, Ltd.)
Rotation: 100rpm
Temperature : 265℃
Mixing time : 5 min.

2) Measure melt tension by a rheometer
Rheometer : Capilograph (Toyo Seiki Seisaku-sho, Ltd.)
Measurement temperature : 300℃
Piston speed: 5mm/min

Binder

Fluon PTFE dispersion is suitable for battery binder application. By adding and mixing small quantity of PTFE with powders, it fibrillates and binds the powders and more, PTFE is chemically stable.
